Line Judges
Rule 9.3d says the line judge indicates whether a ball is inbounds or out of bounds when it lands on or near any line for which the line judge is responsible.
Situation: the ball lands on the side of the R2. The R2 does not see the play. The line judge on the side of the R2 indicates she did not see it. The R1 did not see it. The line judge says she saw it as out. The R1 goes with the line judge and calls it out. The coach says the R1 can’t go with this call because in the rule book it says that’s not the far line judge’s call. Answer?
No one likes to be in a situation where there is doubt or question. In proper order on this play the R1 should look to the Line Judge (LJ) who has responsibility for the line nearest where the ball landed. If that LJ is unable to make a call then the R1 should look to the R2. You stated that the R2 did not see the play. In most instances the R2 should not be looking at lines and where the ball lands. The R2 has enough responsibility at the net area. If the R1 does not have a good view the correct call should be a replay. The opposite LJ should not even be considered in the decision. The coach would have very right to be upset in this case.
