possible illegal substitution
During a varsity match, the coach requested a substitution. The R2 complied and conducted the substitution process. The R2 recognized on his card that the substitution could not take place. The coach recognized it as well and immediately requested a time out. The R2 granted the timeout. Upon entrance to the court, the team had the right lineup. During this time, the R1 was waiting to beckon serve but hesitated. The whistle to beckon serve was never blown. At the end of the timeout, the team entered the court with the correct lineup. Should the R1 assessed a delay of game or illegal substitution, or maybe nothing at all because the R1 did not beckon serve that would have gotten the team in an illegal substitution?
“The coach requested a substitution” R2 whistles and facilitates the sub. If the sub is illegal…….do not allow sub, whistle and step up to the sideline and show the delay signal with the proper card (yellow for warning/red for penalty if this is the 2nd delay in the same set). Coach can then call a time out BUT there are no more subs during this interval!
R1 has to watch what is happening and if the R2 does not handle correctly then the R1 will administer the delay…do not allow the sub…whistle, call the captain to the stand and explain this is delay sanction (warning/penalty) for illegal sub…there are no more subs during this interval and pull the proper card and show the card over the wrist on the offending side. The R2 will make sure the sanction is recorded properly on the score sheet and should be prepared to answer questions from the coach and make sure the coach does not try to talk to the R1 across the court.
Remember if the R2 blows the whistle for sub…either sub or delay the coach can take a delay…they do not have to sub BUT if they don’t sub, administer delay.
