Ball Hits Ceiling
What is the procedure for the R1 when a ball contacts the ceiling after the team’s 2nd contact? The ball is still on their side of net over a playable area. Does he/she wait for the ball to fall to the court before blowing their whistle to stop play??
There is no procedure because there is no violation. A team is permitted three hits. Until all three attempts have been exhausted or the ball falls dead the official allows for play to continue. Since the team has just completed its second hit they are eligible to play the ball off the ceiling (given this scenario the ball is over a playable area and comes down on their side). If they do not play the ball, then yes, once the ball hits the floor the R1 whistles the play dead and awards point to the other team. If the ball lands out of bounds it is the “touch” signal (signal #10). If the ball lands on the court inbounds then the official uses the “down” signal (signal #13).
